Fans of straight-ahead, blues, and gospel-tinged jazz will want to check out Cyrus
Chestnut, a standout pianist who has performed alongside such legends as
Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis, and Betty Carter. His sound on the piano
is soulful, rich, confident, and in many ways classic. Chestnut’s leadership
and prowess as a soloist has also led him to be a first call for the piano chair in
big bands like the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra and Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big
Eric Wheeler bass and Chris Beck drums
There’s an increasingly loud buzz around Kandace Springs, the 27-year-old Nashville-based singer-pianist who combines old-soul jazz sophistication with a tasteful touch of R&B and pop. Springs and her expressive, smoky alto recently migrated to Blue Note Records and relaunched herself as a bona fide jazz artist. Her dazzling Blue Note debut, 2016’s Soul Eyes, reveals the influences of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, and Norah Jones.
